How It Works
- 1. Soil test and grass selection. We measure the yard, check sun hours and irrigation coverage, and pull a soil sample. Shade and clay get Raleigh St. Augustine, full sun and traffic get TifTuf Bermuda, and salty ground near the resacas gets paspalum. You get a firm number, not a range.
- 2. Strip the old lawn and grade. We cut out the old grass and weed mat with a sod cutter, haul it off, then set the grade so water runs away from the slab at roughly a quarter inch per foot. Low spots get filled, high spots get shaved.

How long before I can walk on new sod?
Give it about two weeks of light traffic only, three weeks before the first mow, and about a month before you turn kids and a dog loose on it. Roots knit into the soil in roughly 10 to 14 days if you water correctly. The fastest way to lose a new lawn here is to water it deep once a day instead of shallow three times a day for the first week.
Can you install sod in the summer in Brownsville?
Yes, and we do it constantly — warm-season grass roots fastest in warm soil. The catch is water.
